Cressing Temple Gardens …
…… be a Friend

Friends of Cressing Temple gardens are working to protect these special gardens in their unique setting by focusing on their conservation and development into a place of research, education and historical representation as well as a source of therapeutic and medicinal plant knowledge.
The gardens form an integral part of the site where stand the famous mediaeval barns built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar. The Walled Garden is a faithful reconstruction of garden history, developed in the early nineties using painstaking research to achieve authenticity. Enclosed by its original Tudor brick wall, its centrepiece is a brick fountain from which trickles water along a rill to a Tudor brick built fishpond. A wooden viewing platform (on the site of the original brick terrace) provides a vantage point from which to survey the garden. Planting is true to what we know of Mediaeval and Tudor gardens and includes a knot garden with box hedging, a nosegay garden, arbour, medicinal plants and a vegetable garden.
See the Chairman’s introduction for more information on the background to the Friends group.

Friends of Cressing Temple Gardens will be a source of volunteers to help in the garden and with other projects. There will be opportunities to fundraise for specific projects and focussed learning through garden tours and talks. If you have administrative or archiving skills these will be especially useful. Becoming a Friend of Cressing Temple Gardens will open opportunities to become involved in a precious resource unique to Essex, either actively or simply to enjoy the peace and tranquility offered by visiting the gardens and enjoying the benefits being a Friend has to offer.
